Save Money Flying with Kids

Flying with kids can be daunting, but with a few tips to save money along the way. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or planning your family's first flight, these practical tips will help you navigate the skies with ease and keep your budget intact. Here's how to make your next family trip more affordable and enjoyable:

save money on flying with kids

1. Sign Kids Up for their Own Airline Accounts

Even kids can earn miles! Accumulate points on every trip and use them for future flights or upgrades. Just create an email address for your kids, and sign them up. You can even claim miles from past flights on many airlines.

2. Don’t Pay for Upgraded Seats

These airlines guarantee adjacent seats for child 13 or under and an accompanying adult at no additional cost for all fare types: Alaska, American, Frontier, and JetBlue. United and British Airlines have similar policies as well.

3. Pack Bulky Items in Your Car Seat Bag

Use the extra space in the car seat bag (car seats check for free) to pack diapers, blankets, life jackets, or other bulky items, saving space and avoiding extra baggage fees.

4. Pack Your Own Lunch

Save money by bringing your own snacks and meals. Make sure you pay attention to the rules for flying with certain foods in that country.

5. Bring Refillable Water Bottles

Fill them up after security to avoid buying expensive bottled water at the airport.

6. Open an Airline Credit Card

Many offer free checked bags and other perks that can save you money on family trips. Some waive the fee for the first year, and almost all give you bonus miles when opening the card. I personally have both an American Airline Aviator card and a United Explorer Card and love the benefits from both! If you're interested in opening up one of these cards here are my referral links: American Aviator Card or the United Explorer Card
