One of my favorite travel tips for families is to involve your kids in taking photos during your trip. It's so fun to see their perspective! Below are our recommendations on cameras by age.
Under Age 3
For babies and toddlers under age 3, I wouldn't recommend investing in a real camera just yet. Instead, consider starting with toy pretend-play cameras. This helps them get accustomed to the idea of taking photos. Encourage them to snap pictures alongside you using their toy camera, while you use your real one. This early interaction can prepare them for when they're ready to handle a digital camera. Here are some recommendations: Sassy Busy Box Camera, Skip Hop Play Camera, LeapFrog Play Instant Camera
Ages 3-5
Around age 3, kids can begin using a child-friendly digital camera. These cameras are designed with fun themes and durable housings to withstand accidental drops. Some even include video recording capabilities. They typically come with a memory card for transferring photos to a computer, and their small size fits well in little hands. A carrying strap adds convenience. However, due to their smaller screens and camera sizes, they're best suited for preschool-aged children up to around 5 years old. Check out these options on Amazon: Kids Dinosaur Digital Camera, Seckton Kids Selfie Camera, VTech KidiZoom Camera
Ages 6+
By age 6 or 7, children who have learned to handle their belongings carefully can graduate to a regular point-and-shoot camera. Amazon offers several options specifically tailored for kids. Here are some options: 44MP Point and Shoot Camera, Choose your Color Digital Camera, 64MP 4K Digital Camera
Ages 12+
Around age 12, consider upgrading to a higher quality camera compared to those for younger children. Some parents might hesitate with such investments for younger kids, but my 6-year-old has been doing well with one of these cameras. The Canon PowerShot is my personal favorite in this category. Here are my recommendations from Amazon: Canon PowerShot, Canon SX740, Kodak Pixpro
Ages 16+
If your teenager has a serious interest in photography, consider investing in a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses. Nikon and Canon are leading brands, with Canon being my personal preference for slightly better quality. There can be a lot of research going into which camera and lenses to choose. But here are my recommendations on the very basics to start with for your first DSLR camera: Nikon D3500 or Canon EOS Rebel T7
Instant Print Cameras (Ages 5+)
For immediate results, look into a Polaroid-style camera that prints photos instantly. Consider introducing this around age 5 or 6, once kids understand the value and cost of film, encouraging them to be intentional with their photos, as the film can be expensive. Here are three options from Amazon: Kids Camera Instant Print, Fujifilm Instax Mini, Kids Camera Selfie Instant Print
